The United States may not pass the "save the industry law" that is favorable to the Philippines.

The business agency said on January 4th that the Board of Investment (BOI) stated that the US Congress may not pass the rescue of the Industrial Law. The purpose of this bill is to save the Philippine garment industry in crisis. Lucita P. Reyes, chairman of the Investment Committee, said that they will propose the bill again.

The bill was proposed by congressmen Jim McDermott and Brian P. Bilbray in June of last year. There are 10 promoters for this bill. Senators Kit Bond and Daniel Inouye also proposed a company bill S. 3170.

According to the stipulations of the Act 809, all garments that have been cut and fully sewn in the Philippines using cloth and yarn made in the United States will be subject to duty-free access to the United States. In addition, garments produced in the Philippines by spinning or drawing from the United States can enjoy a 50% MFN tariff when entering the US market.

However, after hearing that a small number of Filipino World War II veterans decided to bring the US government to court, US Senator Daniel Inouye withdrew his support for the bill.
