On Monday, customs officials confirmed that 144 trucks carrying a total of 8,253 bales of cotton entered Bangladesh. This marks the first time since the export restrictions were put in place that Indian cotton has flowed into the country.
Dipak, the manager of LGW, an Indian cotton export company, explained that on April 9, the Central Ministry of Finance in India introduced a new tax of Rs 2,500 per ton on exported cotton. Additionally, the government mandated that all cotton export permits must be issued from New Delhi rather than Calcutta.
Then, on April 19, the Indian government issued a direct ban on cotton exports to Bangladesh, which caused immediate disruption for exporters and importers alike.
In response, the Indian Cotton Exporters Association filed a petition with the High Court, challenging the legality of the export ban. The court recently ruled in favor of the exporters, allowing India to resume cotton exports to Bangladesh starting Monday.
Bangladesh is one of the world's largest cotton importers, relying heavily on cotton to support its massive textile industry. Annually, the country imports approximately 5.5 million bales of cotton, with around 4 million coming from Uzbekistan and 1 million from India.
By Monday night, the first batch of 144 trucks had successfully crossed the border at Benapole customs, signaling a potential shift in trade relations between the two South Asian nations. Analysts suggest this move could help stabilize Bangladesh’s supply chain and reduce dependency on alternative sources like Uzbekistan.
With the legal challenge resolved and exports resumed, both countries are now looking toward a more stable and predictable cotton trade in the coming months.
Bangladesh has begun importing Indian cotton
Six months after India imposed a ban on cotton exports, Bangladesh has started importing Indian cotton again.
