introducing sew house seven patterns by Peggy Mead

Today, we're thrilled to introduce you to a fresh collection of digital sewing patterns available in our shop. Peggy Mead is the visionary behind Sew House Seven, a line of apparel patterns designed for women. Peggy founded Sew House Seven with the goal of crafting straightforward, user-friendly patterns that inspire both newcomers and seasoned sewists alike. Her professional expertise as a designer and pattern maker is evident in her engaging narrative about how she transitioned into launching her own pattern collection. --- Hi everyone! I’m Peggy, the creator of Sew House Seven, a brand dedicated to sewing patterns that I hope bring joy and creativity to your sewing journey. It's such an honor to share my work on the Oliver + S platform! Let me take a moment to share a bit about my background and how Sew House Seven came to life. I currently reside and work in Portland, Oregon, though my roots are in Moscow, Idaho, where I grew up surrounded by a family full of creativity. By the age of seven, I was already dabbling in sewing, and by thirteen, I was mostly making my own wardrobe. Shopping options were limited in Moscow back then, so creating my own clothes allowed me to express my unique style and gave me immense pride in saying, "I made this!" After college, where I initially pursued biology and nutrition, I somehow wound up with a degree in graphic design. While my passion lay in the arts, I never thought I could build a successful career in this field. Fortunately, my dad encouraged me to explore apparel design further, recognizing my talent and enthusiasm. Eventually, I earned a master’s degree in apparel design from Oregon State University, envisioning a future in academia. My first major role out of school was as a pattern maker and later a designer at Jantzen Swimwear. During my time there, I even traveled to Miss America pageants to fit swimwear on contestants—an unexpected gig for a self-proclaimed rock-climbing tomboy. Working alongside the legendary Pete Menefee taught me invaluable lessons about costume design and storytelling for Hollywood. Jantzen provided a perfect environment for honing my skills, especially collaborating with the factory next door to refine my designs. After Jantzen, I freelanced as a pattern maker and designer for various small brands and briefly taught draping at the Art Institute of Portland. Most recently, I worked as a surface and sweater designer at Pendleton Woolen Mills before focusing full-time on Sew House Seven. The apparel industry has evolved significantly since my early days, but I grew disillusioned with its shift toward fast fashion and mass production. This led me to revisit my initial passion—sewing and creating meaningful garments. In the summer of 2014, I launched Sew House Seven as a side project while still working at Pendleton. Designing my own patterns had always been a childhood dream, and after years of industry experience, I decided it was time to make it happen. The essence of Sew House Seven lies in creating simple, unique patterns paired with comprehensive instructions. My mission is to empower beginner sewists by offering quick-to-complete projects that require minimal fit adjustments. The result? A wearable piece that motivates them to keep sewing. While my patterns cater primarily to beginners, I’ve introduced some intermediate-level designs and may explore advanced ones in the future. I’m often drawn to feminine styles, not overly frilly, which reflects in my designs. Each pattern features thoughtful details while maintaining simplicity. Take, for example, the Tea House Dress, which looks vintage in silk or modern in cotton ikat. Every time I see photos of completed projects shared by fellow sewists, I’m filled with joy. Whether they’re seeking advice or celebrating victories, these interactions remind me why I love what I do. Sewing enthusiasts are truly remarkable, and I’m grateful to be part of this vibrant community. Looking back, I never imagined I’d be living my childhood dream. Creating Sew House Seven has brought me immense fulfillment, and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of such a supportive sewing community. You can explore my patterns in the Sew House Seven section of the Oliver + S shop. --- *P.S. If you'd like to see more of my work, check out the Sew House Seven section of the shop! And don’t forget to share your creations—I’d love to see how you interpret my designs.*
