Polypropylene (PP) is a strong alternative to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in blow-molded bottles. Compared to PET, PP is more cost-effective, lighter, and offers better heat resistance and lower moisture permeability. Some transparent grades of PP even exceed PET in clarity and gloss.
PP is 10–30% cheaper than PET, with a lower density (0.9 g/cm³ vs. 1.35 g/cm³), making it a lighter option. This means that PP bottles are not only more economical but also easier to handle and transport. Additionally, PP can withstand hot filling at temperatures up to 100°C, which makes it ideal for products like juices and jams. In contrast, standard PET bottles cannot be filled above 76°C due to their glass transition temperature, though some advanced treatments have improved this capability.
While PP has a moisture barrier that is about five times better than PET, its oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability is 30 times higher. This means that PP bottles often require an additional barrier layer to prevent gas exchange, unlike PET bottles, which don’t need such layers.
In its pure form, PP is not as transparent as PET, so additives are commonly used to enhance its optical properties. Moreover, PP has lower thermal conductivity, leading to longer processing and cooling times—making the production cycle 25% longer than that of PET. However, nucleating agents can speed up crystallization, reducing cycle time and improving transparency.
The processing temperature range for PP is narrower (3–5°C) compared to PET (10–15°C). This makes PP less forgiving during manufacturing, but it also means that the equipment required for PP preforms is generally less expensive than that for PET.
PP is widely used in food and beverage packaging due to its versatility and cost-effectiveness. Initially, PP had some limitations, such as poor transparency, long cycle times, high gas permeability, and low impact strength. However, these issues have been addressed through the use of clarifying agents, nucleating agents, and barrier layers. These advancements have significantly improved PP’s performance and expanded its market potential.
