Hetian New Jade Collection Top Four Tips

With the rising cost of Hetian jade seed material and a shrinking supply in the market, the potential for new jade collections has become increasingly promising. However, experts emphasize that collecting new jade should focus on quality rather than quantity. They suggest that collectors should prioritize pieces that are new in concept, unique in design, exceptional in craftsmanship, and outstanding in artistic value. Only by doing so can they achieve greater returns. New jade is gaining popularity among collectors. “The stock market fluctuates, but after all, it's still about the long-term gains. As for the jade I've bought, their prices have multiplied several times over,” said Mr. Chen, a Shanghai-based collector. He is the marketing director of an advertising company and has always been into investments. Since he started collecting jade, he became deeply passionate about it. He has collected works from several provincial jade carving masters, initially buying them for just a few thousand yuan. Some of the intricately carved ornaments have now soared to tens of thousands of yuan. Mr. Chen is not alone. Many others are showing growing interest in new jade. During visits to Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou, reporters found that more and more collectors are focusing on acquiring jade for long-term investment. Investors’ aggressive behavior in auction markets also highlights the rising popularity of new jade. In November 2010, Xiling Yinshe Auction Co., Ltd. held an auction of contemporary Chinese jade masterpieces. Out of 82 pieces, 90.2% were sold, with total turnover reaching 39 million yuan. Among them, a piece by Wu Desheng, a master of Chinese arts and crafts, which had won the "2009 China Arts and Crafts Silver Award," started at 5.8 million yuan and eventually sold for 9 million yuan after more than 20 rounds of bidding. The piece weighed only 376 grams, yet its price was sky-high. In fact, the demand for new jade has been increasing for years. By the early 2000s, items like jade tiles and beads with good symbolism and exquisite craftsmanship began attracting investors. Works by renowned jade carvers became highly sought-after, and their values kept rising. In 2009, Xiling Yinshe launched a special auction of ancient jade masterpieces, which received strong responses. Autumn auctions in 2009 and spring auctions in 2010 saw turnover rates exceeding 80%. The main reason behind the rise in new jade prices is the scarcity of raw materials. As jade raw material prices continue to climb, collectors see great appreciation potential. Huang Yuxian, a Zhejiang-based jade carver, explained: “Over the past ten years, the price of white jade seed has increased tenfold.” Before 2002, Hetian jade seed was around 30,000 yuan per kilogram, but now it has risen to 2-3 million yuan per kilogram. Top-grade seeds can reach as high as 1,000 yuan per gram—more than three times the price of gold. Additionally, compared to old jade (Gao Yu), new jade remains relatively affordable, making it accessible to everyday collectors. Reports from the Shanghai and Suzhou jade markets indicate that small-sized new jade products typically sell for under 30,000 yuan. This price range is acceptable to many collectors, especially those who start with small items like pendants. In contrast, Gao Yu and antique palace jades from the Ming and Qing dynasties are rare and expensive, often costing millions. Moreover, counterfeiting is a major concern, deterring many from investing in older pieces. Experts advise that new jade collection must focus on quality. Mr. Gu, from the “Direct Collections Network,” stated that the value of jade depends on both the material and the craftsmanship. Factors such as color, oiliness, density, and purity determine the grade of the material, while the carving skill of the master plays a crucial role in enhancing its value. Mr. Gu summarized the criteria for quality jade into four aspects: newness, uniqueness, excellence, and absolute quality. Newness refers to innovative techniques and modern designs. Uniqueness involves creative concepts and striking visuals. Absolute quality means using top-grade materials, and excellence is about advanced craftsmanship. Customized jade is also becoming popular. This approach allows collectors to express personal style while reducing costs. Instead of buying pre-made pieces, collectors can select raw materials directly and collaborate with artisans to create personalized designs. This not only avoids mass-produced, generic items but also lowers expenses by eliminating middlemen. For example, a jade piece custom-made for 10,000 yuan might be sold for 15,000 yuan in retail stores. Customization saves money on overhead, advertising, and other operational costs. Through professional agencies, collectors can ensure quality materials and skilled craftsmanship, allowing them to fully showcase the beauty of jade and enhance its collectible value. This trend reflects a growing desire for personalized and meaningful collections in the jade market.
