With the rising cost of Hetian jade seed material and a shrinking supply in the market, new jade collection has emerged as a promising investment. However, experts emphasize that collectors should focus on high-quality pieces that possess four key qualities: novelty, uniqueness, absolute craftsmanship, and excellence. Only by selecting such pieces can investors expect significant returns.
New jade is gaining popularity among collectors. Mr. Chen, a marketing director from Shanghai, shared his experience with reporters. “Stocks are volatile, but jade collections have consistently appreciated. Some of the jade pieces I bought have increased in value several times over.†He started collecting new jade and has since acquired works from renowned provincial jade carvers, purchasing them for just a few thousand yuan. Today, some of these finely crafted pieces are worth tens of thousands.
Mr. Chen is not alone. Many investors are turning to new jade as a long-term collection strategy. Journalists found that in cities like Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou, more collectors are specializing in acquiring jade for its appreciation potential.
The auction market also reflects this trend. In November 2010, Xiling Yinshe Auction Co. held an event featuring contemporary masterpieces of Chinese jade carving. Out of 82 pieces, 90.2% were sold, totaling 39 million yuan. One piece by Wu Desheng, a master of Chinese arts and crafts, started at 5.8 million yuan and eventually sold for 9 million yuan after intense bidding. Despite its high price, the piece weighed only 376 grams, showing how valuable new jade has become.
New jade’s popularity dates back a few years. By 2008, items like jade tiles and beads with symbolic meanings and fine craftsmanship began attracting investors. Some works by famous masters became highly sought-after collectibles, with prices steadily climbing. In 2009, Xiling Yinshe launched a special auction of ancient-style jade carvings, which received strong responses. The following year’s auctions saw turnover rates exceeding 80%.
The main driver behind the surge in new jade prices is the scarcity of raw materials. According to Huang Yuxian, a jade carver from Zhejiang, the price of white jade seed has risen tenfold in the past decade. In 2002, it was around 30,000 yuan per kilogram, but now it’s up to 2-3 million yuan per kilogram. Top-grade seeds can even reach 1,000 yuan per gram—more than three times the price of gold.
Compared to high-grade jade or antique pieces, new jade remains relatively affordable. Small-sized new jade products typically sell for under 30,000 yuan, making them accessible to ordinary collectors. Most people start with small items like pendants, and the demand is strong. In contrast, high-grade jade and antique pieces from the Ming and Qing dynasties are often priced in the millions, far beyond the reach of average collectors. Additionally, the prevalence of counterfeit high-grade jade has made many hesitant to invest.
Experts stress that quality is key in new jade collection. Mr. Gu, from the “Direct Collections Network,†explained that the value of jade depends on both the material and the craftsmanship. Factors like color, oiliness, density, and purity determine the grade of the material, which can be identified by experienced collectors. However, the artistic level of the carver plays a crucial role. A skilled artisan can elevate a good piece of jade into a masterpiece, while an average one may fail to do so.
Mr. Gu summarized the criteria for quality jade into four aspects: new, unusual, absolute, and excellent. "New" refers to innovative techniques and modern themes. Traditional designs are common, but creative works that reflect contemporary tastes are more appealing and have greater appreciation potential. "Unusual" means unique design ideas that make the most of the natural characteristics of the jade. "Absolute" means using top-grade materials, as the difference between ordinary and premium jade is vast. Lastly, "excellent" refers to high-level craftsmanship, where a master’s unique skill makes the piece stand out.
Customized jade is also becoming popular. This model allows collectors to personalize their purchases, reducing costs by eliminating middlemen. Instead of buying from retailers, collectors can source raw materials directly and work with artisans to create unique pieces based on their preferences. This process not only avoids mass-produced items but also lowers overall costs. For example, a custom-made jade piece might cost 10,000 yuan, while the same item could retail for 15,000 yuan through traditional channels.
Customization also lets collectors fully express their individuality. By working with professional agencies, they can ensure high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship, enhancing the value and personal significance of their collection. Whether for investment or personal enjoyment, new jade offers a dynamic and evolving opportunity for collectors.
