50 Years of Donation of Works of the China Art Museum

As the Spring Festival of the Xinqin approaches, the "China Art Museum 50 Years of Donations Exhibition" has opened in Beijing on the 26th. Carefully curated by the China Art Museum, this exhibition offers a rich cultural experience for audiences celebrating the Lunar New Year, showcasing masterpieces that reflect five decades of artistic contributions. The collection features an impressive range of works donated by renowned artists and collectors. Highlights include Ming and Qing dynasty paintings from Deng Tuo's collection, such as pieces by the Eight Great Masters, Shi Tao, Qiu Ying, and Shen Zhou. Modern masters like Pan Tianshou, Zhao Wangyun, Ye Qianyu, Jiang Zhaohe, and Li Kuchan are also represented. In oil painting, works by pioneers like Wang Yuezhi, Chen Baoyi, and Pan Yuliang are displayed alongside pieces by later generations, including Wu Guanzhong, Zhu Dequn, Yan Shangyi, and Lin Gang. Printmaking is well-represented by Qi Su, Wang Qi, Yan Han, Li Qun, and Zhao Yannian, while cartoonists Hua Junwu, Zhang Leping, and Liao Bingxiong have contributed their iconic works. Folk art pieces from Wang Shucun and others add a vibrant touch to the exhibition. What sets this exhibition apart is its unique curatorial approach. Rather than simply displaying artworks, it highlights the donors themselves, tracing the history of donations over the past 50 years. Due to the vast number of donated works, only a fraction could be exhibited. The current display includes 89 representative donors across various mediums—traditional Chinese paintings, oil paintings, prints, sculptures, lacquer art, sketches, cartoons, and folk arts—each contributing a few of their finest works. According to reports, this exhibition is just a small portion of the museum’s full donation collection. More works, including international donations, will be unveiled in the future. The exhibition will run until February 26, offering visitors a chance to explore a remarkable cross-section of Chinese art over half a century. Additional information: On the same day, the National Art Museum of China also launched the “Rabbit Year Art Exhibition,” featuring the 50-year donation collection from the China Art Museum. The National Art Museum, built in the 1950s and completed in 1961, is one of Beijing’s landmark architectural projects. It serves as a national institution for collecting and exhibiting art. Since its founding, the museum has received numerous generous donations from artists, scholars, and art lovers nationwide. This year’s exhibition showcases more than 800 works, including Chinese paintings, oil paintings, prints, sculptures, lacquer art, sketches, cartoons, and folk art, highlighting 50 years of the museum’s rich collection. It is a must-see event for anyone interested in Chinese art and cultural heritage.
