Teapot prices rose by 50% into collections

In the wake of a sudden "purple storm" last year, the teapot market faced some criticism and uncertainty. However, after nearly half a year of adjustment, the industry has emerged from the turbulence and is now experiencing rapid growth, especially this year. According to senior industry insiders, the price of ordinary clay teapots has seen a significant rise, with estimates suggesting a 40% to 50% increase over the past year. High-end Zisha works have even outperformed this, with masterpieces commanding prices that are increasingly difficult to match. The true value of authentic teapots has not been affected by the previous market fluctuations. In fact, many pieces have seen their values rise steadily. Tan Jianqiang, owner of Yipin Pot Art, noted that while ordinary teapots have experienced substantial price hikes, high-end works have seen even greater appreciation. He also pointed out that lower-quality pots have largely disappeared from the market, although they haven’t been completely eradicated. “In Dongguan, you can still find some inferior products, but they’re no longer common. The demand for them has dropped significantly,” he explained. With the maturation of the market, substandard teapots are gradually being phased out. “As the industry develops, poor-quality teapots will naturally exit the market,” Tan said. This shift reflects a growing awareness among collectors and investors about the importance of quality and authenticity. Currently, works by young and middle-aged artisans are dominating the market, while masterpieces from older generations are becoming increasingly rare. “Many of the older masters created their best works during their middle years, and those pieces are now highly sought after,” Tan explained. He added that most master potters are now in their 70s and have largely stepped back from active production, making their works even more scarce. The demand for young and middle-aged artists’ pieces is also outpacing supply. Tan highlighted that the most collectible works come from two main groups: established middle-aged and young artisans and the hands of seasoned masters. Among the younger generation, names like Zhuang Yulin, Ge Taozhong, Shi Xiaoma, Jiang Jianxiang, Chen Guoliang, and Gao Zhenyu are particularly popular. From the master category, Wang Yuxian, Zhou Guizhen, Lu Yichen, and Xu Hanjian are leading figures whose works are extremely hard to find and often appear through auction channels. In Dongguan, the teapot market has evolved into a more sophisticated ecosystem. “There are more investors than actual buyers these days,” Tan noted. Over the past decade, he has observed a shift in the market, where both merchants and collectors are moving beyond simple buying and selling. With limited supply, many traders are holding onto select pieces to ensure better distribution and control over their inventory. Additionally, new platforms have emerged for second-hand teapot trading. The Zisha pot market has gained traction, especially among collectors across the country. These platforms, centered around Yixing, allow players to verify the authenticity of their pieces directly with the artists and assess their market value accordingly. This has led to a more transparent and credible system for teapot trading. When it comes to selecting valuable teapots, Tan emphasized that the key lies in six major factors: the craftsmanship, material quality, design, firing temperature, the artist’s reputation, and the artistic vision behind the piece. “Only when all six elements are present can a teapot be considered truly exceptional,” he said. He also advised collectors to pay close attention to the background stories of young and emerging artists, as their personal experiences and emotional states can greatly influence the character and value of their work.
