Recently, the Quanzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reported a noticeable surge in the volume of garment inspections by local export companies. This increase is largely attributed to the unusually cold weather in several European countries, including the UK and Germany, which has led to a sharp rise in demand for warm clothing. Since November last year, many apparel manufacturers in Quanzhou have been flooded with large orders from European clients for winter products.
According to Lin Shi, a representative from a textile company in Shishi, the typical peak season for winter exports usually begins around the time of the Lunar New Year, with most summer dresses already shipped out by then. However, this year’s situation is different. A severe cold snap has hit Europe, significantly boosting the need for winter wear. In mid-November, the company started receiving multiple replenishment orders from European customers. By December, the number of winter-related orders had doubled compared to previous years. These orders are typically placed six months in advance and shipped by sea, with a relatively short production cycle of about 25 days. Most of the recent winter orders were directly placed by customers themselves.
According to officials from the Quanzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, the city's textile and garment exports mainly target Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. Due to a series of cold waves affecting these regions, the export of warm clothing such as winter coats and jackets has seen a significant increase over the same period in previous years. According to statistics, in December 2010, the bureau inspected a total of 3,199 new batches of textile and other goods, valued at $120 million. This represents a 23.6% and 67.6% year-on-year increase in the number of batches and value respectively. Among these, 70% of the export batches and 71% of the total value were related to textiles and apparel.
Unit prices for these orders have also risen by about 15% compared to regular shipments. "For apparel exporters, receiving replenishment orders is always a good sign," said a representative from XuanSheng Clothing Trade Co., Ltd. "These orders come with higher unit prices, as customers are eager to get the products and are less concerned about price." The company primarily exports winter clothes to Russia, where temperatures have dropped to -50°C in some areas. This extreme cold has boosted demand, with Russian customers placing orders that are 34% higher than the same period last year.
Another foreign trade manager, Lin, noted that European clients have been particularly sensitive to weather changes. Many of them anticipated the cold wave last year and increased their purchases accordingly. One European customer ordered winter clothes in June, which sold out quickly. Since November, they have placed several additional orders. For local garment exporters, the key is to anticipate climate shifts like European clients and prepare suitable products in advance to maximize profits and meet market demands effectively.
This trend highlights how weather patterns can significantly impact global trade, especially in the fashion industry, where timing and adaptability play crucial roles in success.
