In recent months, the Quanzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has observed a significant rise in the number of garment inspections conducted by local export companies. This surge is largely attributed to the unusually cold weather across several European countries, including the UK and Germany, which has led to a sharp increase in demand for warm clothing. Since November last year, many clothing manufacturers in Quanzhou have been receiving large orders from European clients to restock their winter collections.
According to Lin Shi, a manager at a textile company in Shishi, the winter export season typically peaks around the time of the Spring Festival. However, this year, the situation is different. "The snowstorms this winter have significantly boosted the demand for warm clothing," he said. In mid-November, his company started receiving replenishment orders from European customers, and by December, the number of winter-related orders had doubled compared to previous years. These orders are usually placed six months in advance, with a relatively short production cycle of about 25 days. Most of the recent winter orders were placed directly by the customers themselves.
The Quanzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reported that the city's textile and garment exports are primarily directed toward Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. Due to successive cold waves affecting these regions, the export of warm clothing products has surged over the past two months. According to official data, in December 2010, the bureau inspected a total of 3,199 new batches of textile and other goods, valued at $120 million—representing a 23.6% and 67.6% increase compared to the same period in previous years. Of these, 70% of the shipment volumes and 71% of the total value were attributed to textiles and apparel.
Additionally, the unit price of winter garments has risen by approximately 15% compared to regular orders. Xuansheng Clothing Trade’s representative confirmed that replenishment orders often come with higher pricing due to the urgency of customer demand. "Since the customers are eager to get the goods, the prices aren’t too high," they noted. The company’s main winter export market is Russia, where temperatures have dropped as low as -50°C during the day. This extreme cold has driven a significant increase in winter clothing sales, with Russian orders rising by 34% compared to the same period last year.
Lin, a business manager at a foreign trade company, added that European clients have become more climate-conscious in recent years. Some of them anticipated the cold wave as early as last year and increased their purchases accordingly. One European client even bought winter clothes in June and sold them out quickly. Since November, they've placed multiple replenishment orders. For local garment companies, aligning with such forward-thinking strategies could lead to better economic returns. By anticipating weather trends and preparing suitable products in advance, Quanzhou's textile industry can continue to thrive in an increasingly competitive global market.
